The Red Cross celebrity charity Red Tie Affair will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica to honor the humanitarian spirit of extraordinary individuals who have shown courage and unselfish character.

National Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern will attend this exclusive event recognizing the humanitarian spirit of extraordinary individuals. This year, the Red Cross is honoring Betty White, Josh Duhamel and a remarkable team of doctors and medical specialists from Saint John’s Health Center.

Reknown actress and comedian Betty White will be the 2011 recipient of the national American Red Cross “Crystal Cross Award” for her outstanding contributions to animal welfare efforts. She is well-known for her warm heart and loving and generous dedication to animals. Throughout her career Betty has been an inspiration to many people, including all of us at the Red Cross and we are genuinely thrilled to honor her with this prestigious Red Cross award to be presented by Gail McGovern.

The need to provide comfort and care for animals, particularly during a major disaster, is a growing concern for the Red Cross. Families and pets can be separated, animals lost or abandoned, some are injured or hungry. The Red Cross of Santa Monica is proudly spearheading the creation and establishment of a nationwide Red Cross program to aid and shelter animals during emergencies and to provide year-round pet CPR and pet first-aid classes. Betty White, with her lifelong advocacy of caring for animals, is the consummate embodiment of this national program.

Josh Duhamel, star of the “Transformers Trilogy” and hit movie “Life as We Know It” with Katherine Heigl, helped raise funds for Red Cross Haiti Relief by leading a youth Run for Haiti on Santa Monica Beach. The run enabled more than three thousand compassionate young people to become involved in helping the citizens of Haiti through their fundraising efforts. He recently organized a similar event for Japan. Josh will also be honored with a “Crystal Cross Award” for humanitarianism.

The Crocker “Spirit of Volunteerism Award” will be presented to a remarkable team of doctors and medical specialists from Saint John’s Health Center, who assisted in the critical days and weeks after the Haiti tragedy.

The evening will include a gourmet dinner designed by celebrity chef Nick Stellino. This year the evening includes a special performance by world-famous singer Romina Arena.

The event also includes a VIP reception, a Casino, live music, and an auction featuring exciting and unique items.
