The Red Cross has received a $1 million donation from Sandra Bullock and her family to support the relief effort for the horrific disaster in Japan.

The American Red Cross issued the followed statement on the donation: “The American Red Cross is extremely grateful for this generous support from Sandra Bullock and her family. This contribution is vitally important as the Red Cross works to provide critical assistance and essential relief items in this time of urgent need for so many people in Japan.”

The American Red Cross has already made a $10 million donation to the Japanese Red Cross to support the response there.

The Japanese Red Cross has expressed its appreciation for support in such a time of need in their country. “At a time when the Japanese Red Cross is providing medical assistance, blankets, and other humanitarian care to tens of thousands of Japanese who have been devastated by earthquakes, a tsunami, and evacuations occasioned by nuclear power crises, the Japanese Red Cross is extremely grateful for the financial assistance being provided by the American people and the American Red Cross,” said Naoki Kokawa, Director, International Department of the Japanese Red Cross.

Yesterday, Jack Johnson announced he has made a $50,000 donation to Global Giving’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund, and Clint Eastwood confirmed that a portion of the profits from the DVD release of Hereafter will go to victims of the disaster.
