A number of stars have shown they care for the people of New York in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Lady Gaga has announced a $1 million donation to the Red Cross with the following message: “Today I pledge 1 million dollars to New York & The American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief. If it wasn’t for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today. New York is relentless ambition, a drive to succeed, a place where there is a natural pursuit of diversity through compassion. Please accept this gift on behalf of myself, my parents Joe and Cynthia, and my sister Natali; with our deepest gratitude New York for raising us. Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours. Sincerely, Lady Gaga and The Germanottas.”

Also donating money to charities helping victims of the superstorm was Jack Johnson, who has pledged $50,000 to be distributed between Food Bank For New York City, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Save the Children, Waves for Water, GlobalGiving and Direct Relief International.

“After years of touring and surfing along the East Coast, I have made so many great friends,” said Jack. “It is heartbreaking to see the images and hear their stories. I just made donations to help recover and relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy. If you can’t donate money, you can donate food, supplies or your time. Our East Coast family, friends and neighbors need our help.”

Rachael Ray has donated $500,000 to the ASPCA to assist with pets affected by Sandy. Her pet food brand, Nutrish, is donating 4 tons of pet food to victims, and her charity Yum-o! has donated $100,000 to City Harvest and the Food Bank for New York City.
