The 2012 South-South Awards ceremony was officially launched at UN Headquarters yesterday on UN Day for South-South Cooperation.
The awards ceremony taking place on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel will be attended by A-list performers and celebrities. Acclaimed film and television star Laura Prepon will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies. Entertainment will be provided by Don Felder, world-renowned musician and former lead guitarist for The Eagles; Angelique Kidjo, Grammy Award-Winning performer; musician Stephen Bishop; and Grammy Award-Winning violinist Miri Ben-Ari. Renowned Latin singer and five-time Grammy Award-Winner Gilberto Santa Rosa will be honored with a Lifetime Culture Achievement Award for his use of music as an instrument to promote culture for development across the world. The performances will be led by Music Director, Robin DiMaggio.
At yesterday’s launching the President of the General Assembly (PGA), Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, was honored with a South-South Award for his commitment in highlighting the importance of South-South Cooperation.
In appreciation, PGA Al-Nasser said, “South-South Cooperation has enabled countries of the south to pool, adapt, adopt, replicate and scale-up relevant and appropriate developing solutions and technologies.”
Ambassador Francis Lorenzo, the President of South-South News and Chair of the South-South Awards Committee, highlighted the importance of South-South Cooperation, the South-South Awards and this year’s honorees.
This year the 2012 South-South Awards ceremony will celebrate with heads of State and Government, UN Ambassadors, top UN officials and other distinguished guests from the private sector and civil society E-Governance, and ICT infrastructure while looking ahead to the future of Sustainable Tourism, initiatives that are successfully helping to advance the Millennium Development Goals. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Chairman of the Group 77 and Helen Clark, Administrative of UNDP provided their statements in support of UN Day.
Other UN members present at today’s launching were H. E. Amb. John Ashe, President of the High Level Committee on South-South Cooperation, and Mr. Yiping Zhou, Director of UNDP Special Unit for South-South Cooperation.
