United Nations Foundation Founder and Chairman Ted Turner is taking his example of global philanthropy one step further with a public call for the global community to address the world’s toughest challenges.
Tuner made the statement as part of his membership in The Giving Pledge, an effort to invite the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.
UN Foundation President Senator Timothy E. Wirth issued the following statement commending Turner for his leadership in this area: "More than a decade ago Ted Turner established the United Nations Foundation with his historic $1 billion gift underlining the importance of giving back to help improve the world for future generations. Ted’s gift was revolutionary and inspired a new wave of global philanthropy.
“While not everyone can give $1 billion, Ted’s vision was to bring together resources, creativity, expertise from corporations, the reach of non-governmental organizations, and the passion of individuals to create solutions for a better world. Thanks to his leadership, we have created innovative partnerships and campaigns to help the UN reduce polio by 99%, immunize 700 million children against measles, and pioneer successful clean energy businesses serving 300,000 people in India and Africa. Ted’s contribution championed the payment of over $1.6 billion in U.S. debt to the UN.
“Ted’s recent statement as part of the “The Giving Pledge” initiative challenges all of us to remember that global problems can be solved if we work together. Everyone is part of the solution. Whether you give $1 billion like Ted Turner or give $10 to protect a family in Africa from malaria, or $5 to help a young girl have access to education and health, together we can help make a better world. Ted’s vision continues to pave the way and inspire others to do their part to support the UN."
