The Humane Society of the United States will host its annual To the Rescue! Los Angeles Gala on April 22 to benefit the organization’s Farm Animal Protection campaign.
The event at Paramount Studios in Hollywood will honor U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and the late Christina Grimmie for their contributions to animal protection. Actress Elizabeth Banks will present Sen. Booker with his award, while Grimmie’s award will be presented to her family by the evening’s musical performer, Rachel Platten. Noah Cyrus will also perform.
Guests will enjoy a cocktail hour and a gourmet vegan dinner, followed by a live auction and evening program.
The HSUS will honor Sen. Booker with its Humanitarian of the Year Award for his stalwart dedication to animal protection, the advancement of animal welfare laws and for sponsoring humane legislation.
Grimmie’s family will accept the organization’s Impact Award on the late star’s behalf for her devotion to protecting animals. Grimmie’s fans were moved by her incredible talent, enormous heart and call for mercy toward animals who suffer.
“We are pleased to recognize Senator Cory Booker and the late Christina Grimmie for their immense contributions to the animal protection movement,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. “Senator Booker is a leading voice for animal welfare and has already made game changing advances for animals. Christina’s voice, which she used to raise awareness about many animal issues, was silenced much too soon. These honorees inspire us to use our gifts to do good in the world and we are so grateful to both of them.”
Giving a voice to farm animals, The HSUS is leading improvements in farm welfare by working with the food industry to eliminate the worst abuses of farm animals in their supply chains. The HSUS also advances policies to improve the treatment of farm animals and is working with more than 3,000 food service professionals at large institutions to implement popular meat reduction programs like Meatless Monday. The HSUS works with more than 100 major food retailers to eliminate the confinement of hens, pigs and calves in cages.
“The Humane Society of the United States is deeply grateful to the entertainment community for the extraordinary support and generosity it extends to the animal protection movement,” said Michelle Cho, vice president of Celebrity and Entertainment Outreach for The HSUS. “The powerful crescendo of compassionate people in the industry giving a voice to animals through so many artistic mediums is not only effective, but explicitly critical in our mission to alleviate suffering and save lives.”
