International advocacy organisation Global Citizen, announced that Herbert Grönemeyer, Coldplay, The Chainsmokers and Ellie Goulding, will headline a free-ticketed concert on Thursday, July 6, at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg.
The event, held on the eve of the 2017 G20 Summit, will call on the most powerful world leaders to deliver on their responsibility to help the world’s most vulnerable people.
Starting March 14th, activists and music fans can start earning their tickets by joining the Global Citizen movement at www.globalcitizenfestival.de where 9,000 free tickets to Global Citizen Festival Hamburg will be given out to Global Citizens who sign up, take actions, and enter the draw for free tickets.
Less than two years after the adoption of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, little progress has been made and world leaders are not being held accountable, with many retreating to isolationism. The G20 Summit is a critical moment of accountability for the world’s most powerful leaders who are uniquely placed to mobilize the political will and financial resources needed to fight inequality and poverty. Global Citizens will gather in Hamburg the day before the Summit, demanding the G20 countries agree to concrete commitments to address and deliver on the Global Goals, particularly in the areas of education, health, development, and the global refugee crisis. Additionally, Global Citizens will call for leaders of all major German political parties to maintain and increase foreign aid commitments following the 2017 elections.

They have had two years to address the Goals, and while some leaders are stepping up, others are engaging with empty promises. As Global Citizens, we do not accept this; we do not accept the status quo or believe these issues are beyond our capacity to fix. With the support of the international community and our partners convened in Hamburg this July, the G20 leaders will hear our call. Together we will make a lasting impact for generations to come.”
Herbert Grönemeyer said: “Unifying our efforts will help to make our goals of eradicating extreme poverty, improving global access to drinking water and vaccinations, as well as continuously reducing social inequality a tangible possibility for the foreseeable future. A start has already been made and against all odds people who see themselves as global citizens of one world act alongside one another in order to get there. It feels good to ACT.”
Ellie Goulding said: “It is truly inspiring to see so many people come together and take action, participating in these essential conversations, and holding world leaders to account. After joining the Global Citizen Festival on stage in New York last summer I am incredibly excited to continue on the journey to a sustainable future free of extreme poverty by performing in Hamburg on July 6th.”
In six years, Global Citizen has grown into the largest, most visible movement of engaged activists working to influence world leaders and decision-makers to enact policy changes and commit significant resources to help end extreme poverty and its associated challenges. In 2016, Global Citizen brought the movement and action-based model to Canada and India for the first time.
