When actress Jane Fonda first heard environmentalist David Suzuki speak, back in 1989 at an event in Malibu, she found him more impressive than all the Hollywood elite present.

What impressed her, she says, was Suzuki’s ability to explain the science behind the issues, and she found his passion for protecting the environment “positively electrifying”.

“I’m still inspired by David and his Foundation’s work,” says Fonda. “That’s why I made a donation in honour of his 80th birthday,” which took place last month.

At the same time, Fonda challenged her fans to do the same thing. Her challenge was part of a larger David Suzuki Foundation campaign for Suzuki’s round-number birthday, which in total raised over $110,000.

“David’s birthday wish was for all of us to come together to protect the people and places we love,” says Fonda. “I can’t think of a more beautiful call to action — or a more urgent time to act for the pressing issues facing our planet.”
