The event celebrated five trailblazing women from across the world who are fearlessly working to transform their communities, and inspire a new generation of global leaders to seek innovative solutions to the most dire problems.

Distinguished presenters, including Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, designer and longtime Vital Voices supporter Diane von Furstenberg, honored Cameroonian political leader Kah Walla, Myanmar conservationist and entrepreneur Yin Myo Su, Pakistani anthropologist and filmmaker Samar Minallah Khan, Tunisian activist Amira Yahyaoui, and Guatemalan entrepreneur Karla Ruiz CofiƱo. They each demonstrated conviction in their goal to empower the citizens of their country in unprecedented ways, implement long lasting change, and inspire future leaders. The program also featured appearances by Vital Voices Board Chair Susan Davis, Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley, Spanx founder Sara Blakely, Academy Award-winning actress Sally Field, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace President Bill Burns, Ambassador Melanne Verveer, and others.

“More than any other single force, the drive for women to be recognized for their own merits and to be equal partners in society and to give girls more doors of opportunity open and not shut, has driven the rise of so much good in the world,” said President Clinton. “And the key issue is in believing in a society of politics and of economics of radical inclusion, of leaving no one behind.”

In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, Vital Voices presented a special edition of the Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards, called the Vanguard Award, to each honoree. This distinction honors a woman with a daring vision for the future. An innovator, she takes risks and turns lessons learned from the past into bold, creative solutions for tackling the world’s toughest challenges, leading the way toward progress and opportunity for all.

“We cannot be satisfied with the progress we’ve made in the past two decades. We must continue to strive for innovative solutions, celebrate visionary leaders, and continue to empower women and girls worldwide,” said Alyse Nelson, CEO of Vital Voices. “The women we celebrate tonight are true visionaries, and we are inspired by their work to call on every global citizen to share their ideas for building a brighter, safer, more inclusive future.”

Rising Harvard University junior Monica Mishra, who participated in the 2012 ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative, spoke on the importance of the next generation of leaders to make change.

Vital Voices launched #FutureStartsWith to create a social media platform beyond the evening’s event to discuss creative, innovative and audacious solutions to combating violence against women and girls, expanding economic opportunity, and advancing women’s political and public leadership.

Vital Voices Global Partnership invests in women leaders who improve the world. Founded by former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and guided by the belief that women are essential to progress in their communities, we partner with leaders from more than 140 countries who advance economic opportunity, increase political and public leadership, and end violence against women.
